Quick answer

To get random date ideas, set four filters (long distance or in person, budget, time and mood) and press “Show me date ideas”. You get three ideas that match, each with three simple steps and a tip. Press shuffle for three more, or tick “No camera needed” for long-distance dates you can do without being on camera together. There are 40 ideas in total, from a free film night in sync to a pottery class. It is free and needs no sign-up.

How the date idea generator works

Your filters are saved in the page link, so if you send it, your partner sees ideas from the same filters. Leave any filter on “Any” to see more options; if nothing matches, set one filter back to Any.

  1. Choose where you are: long distance, in person, or any.
  2. Set a budget (free, low cost or a treat), how much time you have, and the mood: cosy, active or creative.
  3. Press “Show me date ideas”. Three matching ideas appear, each with steps and a tip.
  4. Press “Shuffle: three more” until one makes you both smile.
  5. Share your favourite as a link or image so your partner can say yes.

Why filters beat a long list of date ideas

Long lists of “100 date ideas” are fun to scroll but hard to use. Half the ideas need a car, a sunny day or money you do not have this week. Filtering by budget, time and mood cuts the list down to what you can actually do tonight.

Each idea also comes with steps, because a plan you can start in five minutes is far more likely to happen than a vague “we should go stargazing some time”.

Example

Example: Cook the same recipe on a call (long distance, low cost, an evening, cosy)

  • 1. Pick a recipe that takes under an hour and share the shopping list.
  • 2. Prop your phones up in the kitchen and start at the same time.
  • 3. Eat together on camera and rate each other's plating.
  • Tip: choose something forgiving, like pasta or a stir-fry.

Example

Example: Dessert crawl (in person, low cost, an evening, active)

  • 1. Pick three places known for one dessert each.
  • 2. Share one dessert at each stop.
  • 3. Crown a winner at the end.
  • Tip: walk between stops so you have room for the last one.

Date ideas by budget

Here is a taste of what the generator suggests at each budget. Every one has steps and a tip in the tool.

Low costCook the same recipe on a call; swap open-when lettersDessert crawl; couples bake-off; picnic in the park

Cheap dates are often the most memorable, because they leave room for talking. The free filter is a good default for the end of the month.

Long-distance date ideas

Choose “Long distance” and every idea is something you can do from two places: cook together on a call, watch a film in sync, read a book aloud a chapter a night, or plan your next visit together.

Not every long-distance date needs you both on camera. Tick “No camera needed” for ideas like a photo scavenger hunt, swapping playlists or writing open-when letters. They work across awkward time zones, on bad connections and on days one of you is simply tired of screens.

  • Find the hours you are both free with the time-zone overlap tool before you plan.
  • Alternate who picks the filters each week.
  • Keep a running list of the dates you loved and repeat them before a visit.

At-home date ideas

Staying in? Set the time to An evening and pick a mood. You will see ideas like a blanket fort film night, an at-home spa night, a board game tournament, karaoke for two or a puzzle night.

The best at-home dates have one small rule that makes them feel different from an ordinary night in: phones in another room, a theme, or a tiny prize for the winner.

Still cannot decide?

If you have narrowed it down to a few ideas, put them on the date night wheel and let it choose. Want to plan further ahead? Save the dates you love to a relationship bucket list and tick them off together.

Several ideas pair with our other free tools: the couples quiz night uses the couples quiz, and the deep questions evening works well with the random question generator.

Q & A

Frequently asked questions

How does the date idea generator work?

You set filters for where you are, budget, time and mood, and it picks three matching ideas at random from 40, each with steps and a tip.

Is the date idea generator free?

Yes. It is free, with no sign-up, and works on any phone or computer.

Does it have long-distance date ideas?

Yes. Choose “Long distance” to see only ideas you can do from two places. Tick “No camera needed” to leave out ideas that need you both on camera.

Are there free date ideas?

Yes. Set the budget to Free to see only ideas that cost nothing, like a film in sync, a sunset walk or a blanket fort film night.

What if no ideas match my filters?

Set one filter back to Any. Combining very specific filters, like a whole day, a treat and long distance, can leave nothing to show.

Can I share a date idea with my partner?

Yes. Press “Share this idea” on any card, then copy the link, share it from your phone or save it as an image.

Does Lovelle save what I type?

No. The tool runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to or stored on Lovelle's servers. When you share, your choices travel inside the link after the # sign, which browsers do not send to websites. That part is not encrypted, so anyone with the link can read it. Share it only with the person it is meant for.
