Quick answer

The best time to call someone in a different time zone is a window when you are both awake and free, not just awake. Pick both cities and the hours each of you is free, and the time zone overlap calculator shows every shared window in both local times, highlights the longest one and warns you before daylight saving changes your time difference.

How to use the time zone overlap calculator

Choose your city and your partner's city, then set the hours each of you is realistically free. The result lists every overlapping window in both local times, picks the longest as your best time to call and draws both days on a timeline, so you can see at a glance where your free hours meet.

Leave the date empty to check today, or choose a date to see the overlap on a particular day, such as the week a clock change happens or the day of a big call. The calculator also looks ahead twelve months and lists the dates when the time difference between your cities will change.

What counts as free time?

Be honest about the hours you can actually talk, not just the hours you are awake. Commutes, work, family dinner and the hour before sleep often do not count. Windows can run past midnight: 18:00 to 01:00 is fine for a night owl, and the calculator treats it as running into the next day.

Worked example: New York and Mumbai

One partner is in New York and free from 7:00 AM to 11:30 PM. The other is in Mumbai and free from 8:00 AM to 12:30 AM. On 24 October 2026, Mumbai is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead. The calculator finds two windows:

Example

Two windows on 24 October 2026

  • Best time to call: 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM in New York, which is 4:30 PM to 12:30 AM in Mumbai. That is 8 hours together.
  • A second window: 10:30 PM to 11:30 PM in New York, which is 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM the next day in Mumbai.
  • From 1 November 2026, when New York leaves daylight saving time, Mumbai is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead, so the same plan shifts by an hour.

In practice this couple might keep a short morning call for one partner (the other's evening) on weekdays and a longer call on weekends.

Best time to call for common time zone pairs

These are typical differences and windows that often work for couples with ordinary daytime jobs. Daylight saving moves several of them by an hour for part of the year, so check your own dates in the calculator.

Call schedule tips by time difference

1 to 4 hours apart

  • You usually share most evenings, so the risk is taking calls for granted rather than finding time.
  • Agree a rough end time so the later partner is not always the one losing sleep.

6 to 8 hours apart

  • One partner's lunch break is often the other's evening; a short weekday call can live there.
  • Weekends are your friend: a late-morning call for one is a relaxed evening for the other.

A 12 hour time difference

  • Morning for one is evening for the other, every day. Pick one of the two daily handovers and protect it.
  • Take turns being the one who wakes up early or stays up late, and swap at clock changes.

More than 12 hours apart

  • You may only overlap early in one person's morning and late in the other's evening. Keep weekday calls short.
  • Lean on messages, voice notes and photos that do not need an instant reply, and save longer calls for days off.

Daylight saving can change your overlap

Countries change their clocks on different dates, and many never change them. In 2026, the UK and most of Europe leave summer time on 25 October and the United States follows on 1 November, so for one week New York is only 4 hours behind London instead of 5. India, the Philippines and many other countries do not change at all, so the gap to them moves by an hour twice a year.

The calculator lists upcoming changes for your two cities. Agree on the new call time before it happens, so nobody is left waiting an hour early.

When there is little or no overlap

Some pairs of cities share very few comfortable waking hours. If the calculator finds no overlap, widen one window by half an hour at a time to see what it would take, or check a weekend day when your free hours are different.

Not every moment of connection needs a live call. A voice note they will wake up to, a photo from your evening or a message that does not need a reply keeps you close between calls. Our weekly plan for long-distance couples in different time zones shows how to put this together, and these daily rituals fit into a few minutes. When you do overlap, questions for long-distance couples can make the call count.

  • Keep a short weekday call and a longer weekend call rather than one stressful daily slot.
  • Share the link so you both see the same plan when clocks change.
  • Counting down to a visit? Add the countdown until we meet to the same message.

Q & A

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the best time to call someone in a different time zone?

Set both cities and the hours each person is free. The time zone overlap calculator shows the times you share in both local times and highlights the longest window as the best time to call.

How do I calculate the time difference between two countries?

Pick the two cities. The calculator shows how many hours (and minutes, for places like India or Nepal) one is ahead of the other on the date you choose, and when that difference will change.

Does the time zone overlap calculator include daylight saving time?

Yes. It uses your browser's current time-zone rules, so the overlap for the date you choose includes any daylight-saving change, and it lists upcoming changes to your time difference.

What if our free hours go past midnight?

Enter an end time that is earlier than the start time, for example 20:00 to 01:00, and the calculator treats it as running into the next day.

How do long-distance couples manage a 12 hour time difference?

Pick one daily handover, such as your morning and their evening, and keep it short on weekdays. Take turns with early starts and late nights, and save longer calls for weekends.

What if there is no overlap at all?

Widen one person's free hours a little at a time, check a weekend day, and use messages, voice notes and photos that do not need an instant reply between calls.

Can I use it as a time zone meeting planner?

Yes. It works for any two people and any two cities; it was simply designed with couples' evenings and early mornings in mind.

Do you save the dates or names I enter?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to or stored on Lovelle's servers. Your inputs are kept in the page address after the # sign, which browsers do not send to websites, so a share link opens with the same result. Anyone with the link can see those inputs, so share it only with people you trust.
